NMHSCTA State Shoot Result

Mesilla Valley SCTP/Highschool team headed north to Raton for the NMHSCTA state shoot competition May 7 through May 9.

The competition started off with Skeet on nice calm Friday morning. MVSS team consisted of Tyler Smelker, Caleb Delk, Woody Crawford, Kaleb Massey, and Ben Crawford for Seniors, with Emily Massey as Intermediate. The team started off strong with Tyler Smelker leading with a 94-first 🏆, Caleb right behind him tied for second with a 93 but ended up third🏅 after the shoot off. Woody Crawford had a strong showing with an 87. MVSS team brought home the team award for season🏆 and state competition🏆.

The afternoon was sporting clays, but due to high winds it was cancelled to Sunday. The team enjoyed the sporting clay event Sunday afternoon, during the warm sun, cool breeze, and little rain. They shot very well for not practicing sporting clays, and the overall team including Woody Crawford 75, Kaleb Massey 71, Ben Crawford 67, Kyle Wysong 66, and Tyler Smelker 63 took second place🏅 with Carlsbad taking first.

Saturday morning started off strong for MVSS in Trap Singles. Woody Crawford led the team with 193, Tyler Smelker 191, and Caleb Delk 190. Very strong showing for these boys in trap. Woody placed second after crushing the birds in the shoot off with a 24🏅.

MVSS did not fair well in handicap and doubles. Caleb led the team with a 181, Woody 170, Grady 167, Tyler 166, and Kyle with 163. Doubles were led by Woody 167, Kaleb 163, Caleb 161, Ben 157, and Tyler 153. We learned from the event, so we can make improvements for next year.

MVSS lone Intermediate shot well over the weekend. Emily got her groove in doubles with a 74 and placing second 🏅overall for Lady intermediate. Also placing fourth in skeet🏅. Great shooting Emily.

Overall Trap the team finished fifth for the state event, but won second for the trap team for the season. That shows they were consistent all year long with trap.

The last category was Top Gun, which Woody Crawford placed third 🏅with a 692 out of 800 for the weekend. Great shooting for the weekend Woody.

Also for season ending awards, Caleb Delk placed second in Skeet🏅, Trap Singles, and Trap Handicap. Tyler placed third 🏅for the season in Skeet.

Would like to close the season with our lone senior Kyle Wysong. With COVID it was a difficult year, as he had to miss many practices and events at the beginning of the season, but provided great numbers at the end of the year. Good luck in your future, and keep crushing clays.👋

Thanks for the support of MVSS members.  Preston Benfield was a great supporter and coach of the youth during the year. He insisted opening up the range during the week, and was always encouraging the youth to be shooting during the weekends. Thanks for helping coach the team this year. Also to all the MVSS members for setting up the trap houses, etc during the year for these youth to have there competition.

We look forward to shooting with the MVSS members during the summer, until next year.

Regards,
Michael Smelker, Coach
